Recipe for Homemade Laundry Detergent

If you are on a tight budget, making your own detergent would be an economical move for you. This would significantly chop down your expenses. But most importantly, you have a clear idea of the ingredients in your soap. You have control on the strength of the detergent and how fragrant it should be. You know if it is still safe for your baby and the environment without sacrificing the clothes’ cleanliness.

There are various recipes to create your own homemade laundry detergent. Unlike what most moms think, a homemade detergent is easy to make. The basic ingredients are readily available in the market and you can purchase them by the bulk. Thus, you can make as many as you want.

Let me share the easiest liquid laundry detergent and powder laundry detergent recipes I know.

Ingredients in making liquid laundry detergents:

  • 3 pints water
  • 1/3 Bar Fels Naphta soap, grated
  • ½ cup Washing Soda
  • ½ cup of Borax
  • 2 Gallon Bucket
  • 1 Quart Hot Water
  • Cold Water

Mix the grated Fels Naphta soap in a saucepan with 3 pints of water. Heat the soap on low until dissolved. Mix in the Washing Soda and Borax. Stir until the mixture thickens. Remove the pan from the fire after.
Add 1 quart of hot water into a 2 gallon bucket. Add the soap mixture and stir it well. Fill the bucket with cold water and mix. Set it aside and let it sit for 24 hours until the mixture turns to gel. Use ½ cup of mixture per load. You could add essential oils for
natural fragrance.

Ingredients in making powdered laundry detergent

  • 1 Cup Soap Flakes
  • ½ Cup Washing Soda
  • ½ Cup Borax

Pour all ingredients into one bucket. Mix well. Use 1 cup for light laundry load and 2 cups for heavily soiled load.

Homemade laundry detergent is becoming more popular especially nowadays that the economy is at a downturn. It is a great way to save money as well as guarantee your baby’s safety from harmful chemicals.

    The powdered soap usage is 1Tb for light loads and 2Tb for regular.
